Bathroom Plumbing FAQs

Why does my bathroom sink or shower gurgle when I flush the toilet?

Gurgling is a classic sign of a venting issue or a partial blockage further down the line. When water and waste move through the pipes, they need air to flow smoothly. If the vent pipe on your roof is blocked or there is a clog in the main drain, air is forced through the water traps in your bathroom sink or shower to escape. This “bubbling” is often an early warning sign that a total blockage is forming and should be inspected before it leads to an overflow.

What is a tempering valve, and why is it required in my Brisbane bathroom?

In Queensland, plumbing regulations mandate that hot water delivered to bathrooms must not exceed 50°C to prevent scalding. However, to stop the growth of bacteria like Legionella, your hot water system must store water at 60°C or higher. A tempering valve (usually identified by a green, blue, or orange cap) mixes hot and cold water to the safe 50°C limit. If your shower is fluctuating between freezing and boiling, the valve may be failing and requires a professional recalibration or replacement.

Why is my water pressure so high, and can it damage my bathroom fixtures?

Many parts of Brisbane, particularly homes at the bottom of hills or near major reservoirs, experience high mains water pressure. Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3500) state that water pressure within a building should not exceed 500kPa. Excessive pressure can cause “water hammer” (banging noises), void appliance warranties, and lead to burst flexi-hoses under your vanity. We can install a pressure-limiting valve at your water meter to protect your bathroom plumbing and extend the life of your taps.

Can I still get parts for the plumbing in my older Brisbane Queenslander?

Yes, though it can be a challenge. Older homes often feature heritage tapware or early-generation piping. While some parts are no longer manufactured, our team carries a wide range of universal spindles and high-quality adaptors. If a fixture is beyond repair, we can recommend modern replacements that maintain the aesthetic of your home while meeting current water-efficiency standards.

How do I know if I have a hidden leak behind my bathroom tiles?

Hidden leaks are common in older bathrooms where waterproofing membranes may have degraded. Look for signs like damp smells, bubbling paint on the opposite side of the wall, or mould growth that returns quickly after cleaning. If you notice your water meter spinning when no taps are on, or a sudden increase in your utility bill, you may have a concealed leak. Our technicians use electronic leak detection to find the source without unnecessarily removing tiles.
